The heart of the book consists of an analysis of the main books in the wisdom tradition this is followed by a chapter which isolates certain abiding contributions of biblical wisdom specifically its insistence on a fundamental realism and the radical scepticism which kept the sages honest. The final chapter puts Israelite wisdom within its ancient Near Eastern setting.
